When I try my old Cubieboard, it comes with a USB to serial dongle. This device is used to establish an SSH connection over serial communication between my laptop and Cubieboard. But, unfortunately, when I plug the dongle into my laptop, an error message appears. Here is the error (actually not an error, just a warning message 😊)
The error is ‘PL2303HXA phased out since 2012’ in the ‘Device Manager’ dialog window (Control Panel-Device Manager in Windows 11). So, what should we do when we meet this error? Throw the dongle away in the trash can? No, your dongle still can be utilized. It just needs an updated new driver since it was produced a long day ago and isn’t compatible with current System Operations like Windows 11.
OPTION 1
First step, please download the new driver in this link, then extract it. Then go to the Device Manager window again, find the suspected error (picture above), right-click, and choose ‘Update driver’ option. After displaying a new window, find the driver and then click the ‘Next’ button
Now, the COM port will appear in the Device Manager window.
But if you experiencing failing to load the driver, you might try these ways
OPTION 2
From the Device Manager window, right-click P2303HXA phased out, then choose ‘Update drivers’ on a pop-up window. After displaying a new dialog window, click ‘Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer’ instead of browsing the drivers manually through the ‘Browse…’ button
The action will open a new dialog window, then choose the first driver (the old one/2008 version). I have no luck when choosing the newest version (2023)
Then recheck your Device Manager window, the COM port should appear there. Thank God, I am ready to debug my Cubieboard 😊😊
Read my next article which will discuss debugging Cubieboard-1 for the first time. Stay tuned ….
